Internationalization of Portuguese Academia: the impact on academic engagement and collaboration with society

Abstract Higher Education Institutions are expected to stimulate the innovation system and contribute development of societies in a global perspective. Within this context, there is an increasing focus on internationalization. HEIs developing institutional mechanisms support internationalization while academics carry specific practices that allow them improve knowledge production. At same time, they encouraged engage with non-academic partners co-produce transfer knowledge, contributing, way, economic social development. Although some research impact academic entrepreneurship, studies effects other dimensions engagement society almost absent. This paper aims fill gap by analyzing relationship between academics’ perceptions different types engagement. Our analysis draws quantitative data provided international survey (APIKS) explores Portuguese context. Findings show perspectives differently way scientists engage. While positive engagement, time stay abroad high publishing internationally high-rated journals may negatively affect orientation towards local community. contributes debate role context knowledge-based society, considering broad spectrum activities.
